NAME: Lysandre
CANON: Pokemon XY
CANON POINT: Post-Flare plot
AGE: No canon age given, though he's clearly an adult both physically and mentally. I tend to place his age around 38.
BACKGROUND: Lysandre on Bulbapedia
PERSONALITY:
The world is split into two groups of people: those who give and those who take.
To anyone looking in on Lysandre's life from the outside, it all can be said to be going rather well; a leading inventor, innovator, and influencer for the Kalos region, he runs his own labs dedicated to the pursuit of bringing people together and enriching their lives. He likewise runs his own café – another place that's designed to bring people together, to facilitate meetings and to provide something to do with oneself. To listen to some people in the Kalos region speak, he's responsible for saving them, for giving their lives meaning and dragging them out of whatever darkness they were previously in and giving them some kind of purpose; for all appearances, Lysandre is a person who gives more of himself to the world than he is willing to take for himself – and according to him, that's the purest sort of person that one can be.
Unfortunately, despite all his attempts at unity and generosity, there are always going to be people who aren't going to play nice. People don't always get what they want; things don't always go according to plan. And there will always, always be those who take more than their share – those who will bleed that sort of generosity dry, who will upset any attempts at unity. People like that, in Lysandre's view, tarnish any genuine efforts that may be put forth; they poison society and they render the world unbearably ugly, and the only way to deal with the problem is to tear it out at the root.
For a time Lysandre's generosity was genuine; for a time he gave freely of himself, back during the days when he was a trainer – but after a while, he too was taken advantage of by those that he would later consider no longer worthy of life. Journals in his labs refer to this time and mention that those that took advantage of him more or less bled him dry, causing a deep despair to grow within him; while most people do not have the means to act on that despair on a large scale, Lysandre isn't most people. Descended from the ancient kings of Kalos, his family bears a terrible secret, knowledge of a weapon capable of destroying all life that its light touches.
Lysandre's life has since been led on two planes of social existence – one in which he's still that person that gives, the one who tries to ease suffering and make people's lives better, the one who will use his passion for people and his own burning ambition to lead Kalos to new heights if he sees fit to do so. And another in which he's the leader of Team Flare, a group of people that he's offered to "save" and lead through the apocalypse for an absurdly large sum of money; in this facet of his life, he plans to renounce any claim he may have to being a good person, to forfeit his ability to be one who gives, and to commit the ultimate atrocity in taking the lives of all people and Pokémon of the region that he hasn't spared by way of recruitment into Team Flare itself.
To give Lysandre more credit than he deserves, he does know that undertaking such an action is wrong; it also doesn't seem to be a decision he came to lightly. When confronted in the base where the ultimate weapon is kept, he seems genuinely remorseful – he cries over what he's about to do, and he acknowledges in so many words that it isn't right or fair of him to be doing any of this – but he also seems unable to see any way for the world to move forward from its current state. It's entirely too far gone, as far as he's concerned, it's too filthy and tarnished for it to ever be elevated beyond itself. It's rather telling, however, that anyone was able to confront him at all – he sent out a message to the region as a whole detailing exactly what he was going to do, and anyone who knew who he was would recognize him immediately and know where he was likely to be found. He also waits to be confronted, giving the impression that he deliberately chose not to continue his work in silence; rather, the implication is that he wants to be stopped – he even gives the one confronting him a genuine option to stop him completely that only doesn't work because it's sabotaged by a third party.
He wants to destroy a large portion of the world – to wipe the slate clean, to start over – but at the same time he wants to be stopped; he wants to be someone who gives, but doesn't believe himself capable of being that sort of person anymore. As far as he's concerned, the only option that remains is to take, and to take violently, and when that doesn't work...well. Left to face his self-loathing and his despair, he ends up taking his own life, in the end.
In life, Lysandre was noted for his passion, for the fire and the energy he put into everything he did; Team Flare was the logical extension of that, their logo literally that of a blazing flame. However, in the end he grew tired of setting himself on fire to keep others warm, and left to his own unchecked despair, burnt himself out entirely.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Lysandre is, for all intents and purposes, a normal human being, with no powers or abilities to his name; however, he does have a fair amount of skills that prove useful in his pursuits. He's an inventor and a technological genius, primarily focusing on communication and connecting people over large distances; he's also studied a good amount in the field of evolution and the various means by which such a thing can be induced in Pokémon, studying extensively under Professor Sycamore's tutelage. He's also a skilled Pokémon trainer, having raised a fairly powerful team and managing to achieve inducing Mega Evolution in one of his partners. Mega Evolution is a skill wielded by very few people in canon; it's basically a temporary form change and power boost that's granted after one bonds strongly enough with their Pokémon. Essentially, he's able to throw the Power of Friendship at his Pokémon hard enough to raise their stats and make them look cool. It's a skill that's useless in Prismatica, granted (the Pokémon he does this with isn't present on his in-game team) but it's something that he's capable of regardless.
INVENTORY:
+ His Holo Caster, a communications device he created back in Kalos; it's pretty much a fancy iPhone that's capable of projecting small holograms.
+ Pyroar (♂), Level 51
+ Mienshao (♂), Level 49
+ Honchkrow (♂), Level 49
